Battlefield Birth

21st March 2020, 10am-5pm

The George Hotel, 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh

Do you want to better understand the nature of birth trauma and how it differs from other perinatal psychological issues in its clinical presentation e.g. PND vs PTSD?

  • Would you like to explore the psychological impact of birth trauma on the mother, parental identity, the couple relationship and mother-baby attachment?

  • Are you struggling to work therapeutically with individuals and couples presenting with birth trauma, tokophobia and perinatal PTSD and would like more confidence?

At the end of the workshop you will have:

  1. An in-depth understanding of the aetiology of birth trauma – both individual and systemic factors.

  2. Awareness of how birth trauma impacts the brain and how to work therapeutically with PTSD symptoms.

  3. A specialist assessment and formulation framework to allow participant to decide on therapeutic focus and when to refer on or suggest other supports.

  4. Specialist knowledge of how perinatal PTSD and tokophobia impacts mother and partner and early attachment with baby, and how to work therapeutically with issues arising.

Using a mix of Powerpoint presentations and small group exercise the morning session will consist of an introduction to the theory of birth trauma including aetiology, symptomatology and clinical presentations. In the afternoon case studies will be used to help participants to apply theory to practice.  The late afternoon session will again be a mix of larger group exercises and discussion of participants’ own case material and ways of working with the issues presented using the theory presented earlier in the workshop. Video material will also be used to highlight lived experience of birth trauma for mothers and their families.
